Civil Rights Legend Lewis Blasts Trump Transgender Ban: ‘I Fought Too Long’ to Allow This

Democratic Congressman John Lewis Tears Into Transgender Ban By Donald Trump

The backlash against the very sudden ban on transgender soldiers in the military by Republican President Donald Trump has been swift, loud, and very widespread, to say the least. Late last night, civil rights icon and Democratic Congressman John Lewis weighed in on the controversial move.

Lewis took to Twitter to voice his vehement opposition to the action. In a brief series of tweets, he stated:

I fought too long to end discrimination based on race and color to allow discrimination based on gender identity to be considered acceptable. I stand with our transgender service members, and I pray that they will not lose heart. They must know that we love them. We respect them. We are grateful for their service and sacrifice, and most importantly, we will stand for their rights, just as they have stood for ours.

Lewis’ activism for civil rights goes back quite a long way, despite the ignorance of his history by a certain person currently occupying the Oval Office.

The suddenness of Trump’s decision has become incredibly clear. Despite claiming he had talked to his “Generals and military experts”, a new report from a Reuters reporter says otherwise. Journalist Idrees Ali stated in a tweet the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff have not received any direction from the president and will not makes changes to any policy regarding transgender personnel until they are ordered.

A report from Buzzfeed also indicated the Pentagon was completely in the dark about the announcement made by Trump on Twitter.

At the Pentagon, the first of the three tweets raised fears that the president was getting ready to announce strikes on North Korea or some other military action. Many said they were left in suspense for nine minutes, the time between the first and second tweet. Only after the second tweet did military officials receive the news the president was announcing a personnel change on Twitter.

There were some indications that even White House staff was not fully prepared for the ban. White House Spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders threatened to leave yesterday’s briefing after too many questions focused on the shocking policy change.

The stories of active duty transgender soldiers began to emerge and showed just how devastating the announcement of the discriminatory policy really was. One soldier incredulously stated:

“I’ve been very stressed out,” Eleazer said. “I think I was just fired via tweet.”

It’s apparent people who fought for civil rights so long ago, like Congressman Lewis, see the parallels against those in the LGBTQ community today. This fight will continue and people with ideologies like Donald Trump are not likely to win in the long run.

Some have seen this type of civil rights battle before. And they know how it ends. Just ask John Lewis.
